Lymphatic System Flashcards
What are the three parts of the lymphatic system?
Lymphatic vessels
Lymph
Lymph nodes
A meandering network in the lymphatic system
Lymphatic vessels
The fluid contained in the vessels
Lymph
Cleanses the lymph as it passes through them
Lymph Nodes
What are the functions of the lymphatic system
Transports escaped fluids from the cardiovascular system back to the blood
Plays essential roles in body defense and resistance to disease
What happens between the blood and the interstitial fluid as blood circulates through the body?
Nutrients, wastes, and gases are exchanged between the blood and the interstitial fluid.
What operates at the capillary beds and forces fluid out of the blood?
Hydrostatic and colloid osmotic pressures
What ends of the capillary bed is the blood forced out of?
Arterial ends of the bed (upstream)
what end of the capillary bed is the blood reabsorbed into?
Venous ends of the bed (downstream)
What happens to the fluid that remains behind in the tissue spaces?
Becomes part of the interstitial fluid
Why must leaked fluid be carried back to the blood?
To ensure that the cardiovascular system has sufficient blood volume to operate properly.
