Lymphatic Drainage of the Upper Limb Flashcards
Where do the superficial lymphatic vessels of the upper limb arise
From lymphatic plexuses in the skin of the hand
Where do lymph vessels travel in the upper limb
In close proximity to major superficial veins
Where do the lymph vessels shadowing the basilic vein go
Enter cubital lymph nodes
Where are the cubital lymph nodes found
Medially to the vein
Proximally to medial epicondyle of humerus
Where do vessels from the cubital lymph nodes terminate
Axillary lymph nodes
Where do the lymph vessels shadowing the cephalic vein go
Enter apical axillary lymph nodes
Some enter deltopectoral lymph nodes
Where are the majority of upper lymph nodes located
In the axilla
What are the 5 anatomical groups of axillary lymph nodes
Pectoral Subscapular Humeral Central Apical
How many pectoral lymph nodes are there
3-5
Where are the pectoral lymph nodes located
Medial wall of axilla
Where do pectoral lymph nodes primarily receive lymph
From anterior thoracic wall (including most of breast)
How many subscapular lymph nodes are there
6-7
Where are the subscapular lymph nodes located
Along posterior axillary fold and subscapular blood vessels
Where do the subscapular lymph nodes receieve lymph from
Posterior thoracic wall
Scapular region
How many humeral lymph nodes are there
4-6
Where are the humeral lyph nodes located
Lateral wall of axilla
Posterior to axillary vein
Where do humeral nodes receive majority of lymph
Upper limb
How many central lymph nodes are there
3-4
Where are the central nodes located
Near base of axilla
Deep to pectoralis minor
Close to 2nd part of axillary artery
Where do central nodes receive lymph from
Efferent vessels from pectoral, subscapular and humeral axillary lymph node groups
Where are apical nodes located
Apex of axilla
Close to axillary vein
Close to 1st part of axillary artery
Where do apical nodes receive lymph from
From efferent vessels of central axillary lymph nodes (ie. from all axillary lymph nodes)
From lypmhatic vessels accompanying cephalic vein
Where do efferent vessels from apical axillary nodes go
Through cervico-axillary canal then converge to form subclavian lymphatic trunk
Where does the right subclavian trunk go
Continues to form right lymphatic duct
Enters right venous angle
What is the right venous angle
Junction of internal jugular and subclavian veins
Where does the left subclavian trunk drain
Directly into thoracic duct
