LVO's Flashcards
Takeoff is banned if any of the following SIX are below minima;
- RVR assessed by the Commander
- TDZ RVR
- MID RVR, when reported and for operations below 200m
- STOP END RVR, for operations below 200m
- Cloud Ceiling, if specified
- Runway indistinguishable from surroundings
Approach Ban (3)?
Not to descend below 1000’ AAL if;
- TDZ RVR < minima
- MID RVR, when reported and relevant < 125m or TDZ when lower
- STOP END RVR, when reported and relevant < 75m
What does “relevant” in mean in this context?
Used during the high-speed phase of the landing down to 60kts
What are the Visual Reference Requirements for CAT I, CAT II and 3A approaches?
CAT I, II and 3A: Three consecutive lights; centreline of the approach, touchdown zone, runway centreline, runway edge or any combination.
In addition CAT II requires a “lateral element of the ground pattern”.
What are the Visual Reference Requirements for CAT 3B (with DH)?
A minimum of one runway centreline light.
What are the Visual Reference Requirements for CAT 3B (no DH)?
No visual reference required.
In the event of downgraded guidance what needs to be completed and by when? (7)
- ECAM/QRH procedure complete
- Approach and minima briefed
- RVR > minima for new approach
- New DH entered (PERF page)
- Approach and landing capability correct for new approach (FMAs)
- Decision announced
Completed by 1000ft AAL
Below 1000ft AAL what failures necessitates a go-around (6)? Unless?
- Downgrade of CAT (triple click)
- Autopilot Off (cavalry charge)
- Amber Caution (ping)
- Alpha Floor
- Autoland light
- Annunciations; No LAND at 350R, No FLARE at 30R.
Unless visual reference already acquired and can be maintained and RVR is ≥ CAT 1
OR below 100R on a CAT 3 DUAL a failure of a redundant system may be accepted, and approach and automatic landing completed.
Actions after touchdown if NWS or antiskid has failed?
Disconnect the autopilot.
When is a takeoff or landing classed as LVO?
When RVR < 400m for take-off and < 550m for landing.
When will a UK airfield be CAT 2 and CAT 3?
CAT 2 600m-400m, CAT 3 < 400m
When are you not allowed to convert Met Viz into RVR?
- When RVR is given
- For takeoff
- When RVR < 800m
What are the autoland wind limits?
30kts HWC, 20kts XWC, 10kts TWC for A320 ceo (see Configuration Table for more).
How do you disengage an automatic approach?
If < 400R; pressing APPR pb or any other vertical mode.
If > 400R; select TOGA
Define a “Fail Operational Automatic” Landing System.
In the event of a failure below alert height the remaining part of the automatic system allows the completion of the approach, flare and landing.
CAT 3 DUAL therefore a CAT 3B approach can be flown.
Define a “Fail Passive Automatic” Landing System.
In the event of a failure there is not significant deviation from flight path or attitude. The pilot assumes control of the aircraft after the failure.
CAT 3 SINGLE therefore only a CAT 3A approach can be flown.
What is Alert Height?
The height above which a CAT 3 autoland would be discontinued if a failure occurred in either the airplane system or ground equipment.
What does the RED Autoland light illuminate for (5)?
- Loss of APs
- Too far off beam
- Loss of LOC beam above 15ft or G/S above 100ft
- Difference between RA’s > 15ft
- The FMGs detect a long FLARE
What items should be reviewed before making a LVO approach (9)?
- Autoland light test
- Crew Qualification
- Ground and Equipment Status
- LVO Procedures
- Alternate
- Downgrade options
- Flight Deck Lighting
- Seat Position
- PED PA
What does CAT 3 SINGLE equate to?
CAT 3A - 50R, 200m
What does CAT 3 DUAL equate to?
CAT 3B - 0/25R, 75m
On a LVO approach, when is the latest that landing clearance can be obtained?
200R
Where can you find the approval for the 125m RVR for take-off?
AOC and Ops Specs > A320
When must an AUTOLAND be used?
Whenever landing with a minima < CAT I
What RVR is associated with CAT I LTS?
< 550m but not < 400m
How many lights equate to a take-off RVR of 125m?
8
Standard 15m spacing, 8x15m + 12m (under nose) = 132m
