Lungs & Pleura Flashcards
Pleura?
thin membrane of fibrous tissue surfaced by single layer of squamous cells
Two layers of pleura?
- parietal (outer): layer lining thoracic wall (rib cage, vertebrae and diaphragm)
- visceral (inner): layer completely covering lung
subdivisions of parietal pleura?
- costal pleura
- mediastinal pleura
- cervical pleura
- diaphragmatic pleura
costomediastinal recess?
- Potential space behind the sternum & costal cartilages, where anterior margin of the lung fails to reach the anterior margin of pleura
- Assists lung expansion during deep inspiration
costodiaphragmatic recess?
- In quiet respiration, inferior margin of the lung does not reach pleural reflection from the thoracic wall to the diaphragm
- Lower limit of lung is about 5cm above the lower limit of pleura
- From 8th to 10th rib along mid-axillary line
arterial supply to the parietal pleura?
- intercostal artery
- internal thoracic artery
- musculophrenic artery
venous drainage of parietal pleura?
- azygous veins
nerve supply to parietal pleura?
- intercostal nerve to costal pleura
- phrenic nerve and intercostal nerves to diaphragmatic pleura
- phrenic nerve to mediastinal pleura
parietal pleura develops from which layer?
somatopleural layer
visceral pleura develops from which layer?
splanchopleural layer
injuries to the root of the neck of the lung may cause?
a pneumothorax
note: children have shorter necks so they r more vulnerable
relations of mediastinal surface- left lung?
- cardiac impression (deep)
- arch of aorta impression
- thoracic aorta impression
relations of mediastinal surface for right lung?
- cardiac impression (shallow)
- oesophagus impression
- SVC impression
- arch of azygous vein impression
arterial supply and venous drainage of visceral pleura?
bronchial vessels
