Lungs Flashcards
What are lungs protected by?
The ribcage
What do lungs contain?
Lots of alveoli
What is alveoli?
Tiny air sacs in the lungs well adapted to gaseous exchange
Why are alveoli well adapted to gaseous exchange?
Name 5 reasons
- They create a large SA
- They are moist
- They have very thin walls
- The constant movement of the blood and the breathing of the lungs keeps a high concentration gradient
- The blood capillaries are right next to the alveoli
Why Is it good that alveoli have very thin walls?
Less distance for gases to travel
Why is it good that the blood capillaries are right next to the alveoli?
Meaning easy access for the oxygen to diffuse into the blood and the CO2 into the lungs
Whys it good that the breathing of the lungs keeps a high concentration gradient?
Perfect for diffusion
What happens when you breathe out?
You ribcage goes down, your diaphragm goes up
What happens when you breathe in?
Ribcage goes up
Diaphragm goes down
Who do breathing systems do?
Take air in and out of the the body
