Exhange In Plants Flashcards
What is an adaptation of plants?
The leaves are thin and flat to increase SA for light
They have a waxy cuticle to perfect evaporation
Why are root hairs cells good in plants
They increase SA because of long, thin hairs
What is transpiration?
Loss of water from surface of plants and leaves
What happens during transpiration?
Water is often lost through stomata
The waxy cuticle minimises it
Water is pulled up through XYLEM to replace lost water vapour
Where does transpiration happen more quickly?
In hot dry, sunny windy conditions
What are stomata
Holes in the underside of leaves that allow CO2 in and O2 and water vapour out for gaseous exchange
What can guard cells do?
They can close off the stomata in order to stop transpiration
Give a detailed definition of transpiration
The loss of water vapour through the stomata, resulting in the movement of water through osmosis through the plant die to the change in conc gradient at the top of the plant
What may happen to plants when they lose water faster than they gain it from the roots?
They may wilt and the cells become less rigid due to the fact they aren’t full of water
What do plants need ?
Osmosis in roots (for water) and diffusion near stomata (for CO2)
