Lung Volumes & Capacities Flashcards
What does FEV1 mean?
Forced expiratory volume in 1 sec
Usually ~0.75FVC (FEF75)
What is the procedure for forming a flow/volume curve and finding FVC?
- Breathe in to total lung capacity
- Exhale as fast as possible in one second
- Volume produced is the forced vital capacity (FVC) in 1 sec
What is FVC?
Forced vital capacity, the total amount of air forcibly expired
FEV, what us normal and low level?
FEV1 , 80% or greater than predicted value - normal
Less than 80% - low
What is airway obstruction?
FEV1/FVC less than 0.7
COPD, asthma
Blocked
What is airway restriction?
FVC<0.8
Pulmonary fibrosis
Decreased expansion ability
What is the tidal volume?
Amount of air inhaled or exhaled in one breath - 500ml a breath
What is Inspiratory Reserve Volume?
Amount of air in excess of tidal inspiration that can be inhaled with max effort
What is expiratory reserve volume?
Max exhalation excess of normal exhalation
What is residual volume?
Air in lungs after max expiration
What is total lung capacity?
TLC = IRV + TV + ERV + RV
What is inspiratory capacity?
IC = TV + IRV
Max amount of air that can be inhaled after TV
What is vital capacity?
VC = ERV + TV + IRV
What is functional residual volume?
FRC = RV + ERV
