Lung Function Testing 1 Flashcards
What is a blue inhaler?
Bronchodilater- acts on smooth muscles of bronchioles
What is a brown inhaler?
Preventer- corticosteroids in it, damplen down immune system, anti-inflammatory drug localised to lungs
What is FEV1?
Forced expiratory volume in 1 second
What is FEV?
forced vital capacity in total
Forced expiratory volume
What is PEFR?
Peak expiratory flow rate-initial slope of vitalograph
Maximum rate person can exhale
Why would PEFR be lower?
Obstructive disease
Function of residual volume
Make sure alveoli doesn’t collapse
What can a vitalograph/spirometer not measure?
Residual volume
What is resistance?
Ease with which gas flows through conducting airways
With obstructive disease
What is compliance?
Ability of lungs to be able to stretch and expand
With restrictive disease
What is FEV1/FVC?
The ratio between FEV1 and FVC
How does FVC, FEV1, FEV/FVC change with an obstructive disease?
FVC stays the same
FEV1 is lower
FEV1/FVC is lower
What would the ratio of FEV1/FVC be of someone with an obstructive disease?
70/80%
How does FVC, FEV1, FEV/FVC change with a restrictive disease?
FVC decreases
FEV1 decreases
FEV1/FVC stays the same or increases
