Lung Diseases: Cystic Fibrosis Flashcards
cause of CF
genetic mutation, affects sodium chloride channels
CF
systemic, progressive lung disease that can lead to respiratory failure
- expression of genetic mutation varies
- multisystem effect
epidemiology
- most common inherited disease in Caucasians
- equal gender distribution
effect on breathing
- thick sticky mucus, hard to move, clogs nasal passages and sinuses
- bacteria gets trapped, causing infections and lung damage
lung sounds
- crackles
- rhonci
- wheezes
- decreased lung sounds
mediate percussion lung sounds are ____
hyper-resonant
patient’s with CF are often recipients of lung/heart transplants. what is needed after this?
cardiopulm PT needed after transplant
PT treatment includes
airway clearance, active cycle of breathing, percussion, vibration, PEEP device, autogenic drainage, exericse, high frequency chest wall oscillation
prognosis
can lead a normal life w/o severe disability with meds, but complications worsen with age
- avg lifespan is 37. usually die of lung complications
