Lung Cancer- Non Small Cell Lung cancer Flashcards
NSCLC types?
- Squamous cell carcinoma
- Adenocarcinoma
- Bronchioloalveolar carcinoma
- Large cell anaplastic carcinoma
Squamous cell carcinoma gross fx?
Central location;
hilar mass with central necrosis and cavitation;
Large in size
Locally invasive
Squamous cell carcinoma histo fx?
Squamous differentiation with
keratin pearls
Squamous cell carcinoma clinical fx?
Metastasizes somewhat later
Adenocarcinoma gross fx?
- Peripherally located (arising from alveolar septal cells or terminal bronchioles)
- Less rapid-growing than squamous cell carcinomas
- Scarring
- Pleural involvement
Adenocarcinoma histo fx?
develops on scar site,
glandular elements with mucin cells
Adenocarcinoma clinical fx?
Metastasizes readily
Bronchioloalveolar carcinoma gross fx?
- Peripherally located (bronchioloalveolar regions)
- Multiple mucinous nodules (which appear on CXR)
- Pneumonia-like consolidation (as multiple diffuse nodules coalesce)
Bronchioloalveolar carcinoma histo fx?
- Lepidic growth pattern
Growth along pre-existing structures without destruction of alveolar architecture - Heterogeneous cellular make-up:
Mucin-secreting bronchiolar cells
Clara cells
Type II pneumocytes
Bronchioloalveolar carcinoma clinical fx?
Good prognosis, well-differentiated, rare
Large Cell Anaplastic Carcinoma gross fx?
Peripheral location;
Large Cell Anaplastic Carcinoma histo fx?
- Large polygonal undifferentiated cells (pleomorphic giant cells with leukocyte fragments in cytoplasm)
- Large nuclei, prominent nucleoli,
abundant cytoplasm, usually well-defined cell borders
Large Cell Anaplastic Carcinoma variants?
- Giant cell carcinoma
- Clear cell carcinoma
