Lung Cancer Flashcards
Describe the histology of Small Cell Carcinoma
- Poorly differentiated small cells
- arises from neuroendocrine cells (Kulchitsky cells)
- Chromogranin positive!!!!
Who is small cell carcinoma associated with?
Male smokers
What is the location of small cell carcinomas?
Central Lung
What are some possible complications of small cell carcinoma?
Rapid growth and early metastasis may produce endocrine or nervous system paraneoplastic syndromes.
(eg ADH, ACTH, or Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome)
Lamber Eaton Myasthenic Syndrome- antibodies against presynaptic calcium channels leasding to muscle weakness
Describe the histology of squamous cell carcinoma?
Ketain pearls or Intercellular Bridges!!
Who is Squamous Cell carcinoma associated with?
MOST COMMON tumor in MALE SMOKERS
What is the location of squamous cell carcinoma?
Central Lung
Whats a complication of squamous cell carcinoma?
may produce PTHrP
Describe the histology of Adenocarcinoma?
Glands or mucin
Who is adenocarcinoma associated with?
Most common tumor in nonsmokers and female smokers
What is the location of adenocarcinoma?
Peripheral Lung
Describe Cell growth in adenocarcinoma
Adenocarcinoma in situ exhibits columnar cells that gro along preexisting bronchioles and alveoli
may present as pneumonia like consolidation on imaging
Describe the histology of Large Cell Carcinoma
Poorly Differentiated Large Cells (no keratin pearls, intracellular bridges, glands, or mucin)
What is associated with Large Cell carcinoma?
Smoking
What is the location of Large Cell Carcinoma?
Central or peripheral
