Bronchopneumonia Flashcards
What organisms cause bronchopneumonia?
- Staphylococcus aureus
- Haemophilus influenzae
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- Moraxella catarrhalis
- Legionella pneumophila
What is associated with Staphylococcus aureus?
- one of the most common causes of secondary pneumonia
- often complicated by abcess or empyema
What is empyema?
Pus in pleural space
What is associated with Haemophilus influenzae?
- Common cause of secondary pneumonia
- common cause of pneumonia superimposed on COPD (leads to exacerbation of COPD)
What is associated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa?
Pneumonia in cystic fibrosis patients
What is is associated with Moraxella catarrhalis?
-Community acquired pneumonia and pneumonia superimposed on COPD (exacerbates COPD)
What is associated with Legionella pneumophila?
Community acquired pneumonia, pneumonia superimposed on COPD, or pneumonia in immunocompromised states
What are some characteristics of Legionella pneumophila?
- transmitted from water source
- intracellular organism
- best visualized with silver stain
