Interstitial (Atypical) Pneumonia Flashcards
What are some causes of interstitial pneumonia?
- Mycoplasma pneumoniae
- Chlamydia pneumoniae
- Respiratory Synctial Virus (RSV)
- Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
- Influenza Virus
- Coxiella burnetti
What is a characteristic of atypical pneumonia?
Low Fever
What demographic is susceptible to Mycoplasma pneumoniae?
Military recruits or college students- young adults
What is the most common cause of atypical pneumonia?
Mycoplasma pneumoniae
What are the complications of Mycoplasma pneumoniae?
- Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (IgM against I antigen on RBC causes cold hemolytic anemia)
- Erythema multiforme
NOT VISIBLE on Gram Stain: NO CELL WALL
What is the second most common cause of atypical pneumonia in young adults?
Chlamydia pneumoniae
What is the most common cause of atypical pneumonia in infants?
Respiratory Synctial Virus
What is associated with Cytomegalovirus (CMV)?
Atypical pneumonia with post transplant immunosuppressive therapy
What demographics are susceptible to atypical pneumonia due to Influenza virus?
elderly, immunocompromised, or those with preexisting lung disease
What is a complication of atypical pneumonia due to influenza virus?
Increased risk of superimposed Staph Aureus or H influenzae bacterial pneumonia
What demographics are susceptible to Coxiella burnetii infection?
Farmers and Veterinarians
Coxiella spores are deposited on cattle by ticks or are present in cattle placentas
What are some characteristics of Coxiella infection?
atypical pneumonia with HIGH FEVER (Q FEVER)!!
Why is Coxiella distinct from other rickettsiae?
1) it causes pneumonia
2) Does not require arthropod vector for transmission (survives as highly heat-resistant endospore)
3) Does not produce a skin rash
