Why did the Lucknow pact come about?
Muslims strategy:
-Muslims lost trust in the British after 1911(reversal)
-needed constitutional protection, the separate electorate, and 1/3 representation from Hindus before demanding self-rule
-Lucknow pact achieved this
Jinnah:
-Jinnah was an ambassador of Hindu Muslim unity and an idealist
-joint demands would yield greater results
Swaraj:
-Congress wanted self-rule
-believed joint demand would put pressure on British
-therefore it was willing to give concessions to the League

-the first instance of Muslim-Hindu unity
-joint demand for the political reform to the British:
1 more seat in councils
2 minority protection
3 provincial autonomy
4 Proposals to be binding on British
-acceptance of congress (after 25yrs of fighting against it)

2 higher representation than the population (in minority areas, applies to both parties)
