LS4 - Deviation From Ideal Mental Health Flashcards
Who Developed DFIMH
Marie Jahoda
DFIMH
Stems from the humanist approach which focuses on motivation and self development. Abnormality relates to the lack of contented existence, therefore deviating from ideal mental health can be classed as abnormal.
Self Actualisation
Means humans should strive to reach their full potential, abnormality can occur when people fail to achieve their goals/meet criteria.
How Is It Measured
Jahoda argued that there are 6 criteria for someone to have a positive mental health and be normal.
The 6 Criteria
Autonomy Perception Of Reality Personal Growth Integration Environmental Mastery Self Attitudes
DFIMH Strengths
Productive
Target Areas Of Dysfunction
DFIMH Weaknesses
Subjective Model
Hard To Achieve
Productive
It focuses on optimal criteria that everyone should aim for - self actualisation is a positive trait everyone should try have.
Target Areas Of Dysfunction
DFIMH can highlight and target areas of dysfunction that the patient and psychologist can then work on.
Subjective Model
It’s based on abstract concepts that are difficult to define/measure e.g. how much autonomy do I need before I fully achieve it.
Hard To Achieve
Very few people can meet all 6 criteria at once, so bare mans w Ould be classed as abnormal when they aren’t its very difficult to achieve all 6 at once.
