Who created failure to function adequately
Rosenhan and Seligman
Failure To Function Adequately
Based on the fact that people are unable to copy with day to day life because they experience psychological distress/discomfort, impacting their personal, social and occupational life.
What Happens If Someone Can’t Cope With Day To Day Life
It could be a sign they aren’t functioning adequately and psychologists use the Global Assessment Of Functioning Scale (GAF) to assess rates of social, occupational and psychological functioning.
How Is It Measured
There’s 7 criteria that help define mental abnormality, the more someone has the more abnormal they are.
7 Criteria
Suffering Unpredictability & Loss Of Control Maladaptive Behaviour Observer Discomfort Vividness & Unconventionality Irrationality & Incomprehensibility Violation Of Moral & Ideal Standards

Difficult To Measure
Abnormality Doesn’t Always Link To Dysfunction
GAF
Allows psychologists to accurately assess the degree of abnormality and if they’re coping with daily life.
Difficult To Measure
It’s a subjective model that lacks scientific support meaning psychologists must be cautious when using it to define abnormality.
Abnormality Doesn’t Always Link To Dysfunction
Harold Shipman killed bare mans but met no criteria, sometimes having a bad day means you’re abnormal on the model when that isn’t the case.
