Lower Urinary System Flashcards
What do the bladder walls consist of?
Smooth detrusor muscle
What does the bladder inner lining (mucosa) consist of?
Mucosa is folded into rugae, lined with transitional epithelium (urothelium)
What is the trigone and what does it do?
Triangular shape between ureteric orifices and internal urethral meatus, contains stretch receptors to detect when bladder is full
Which nerve supplies the external urethral sphincter?
Pudendal nerve (somatic)
Which artery(s) supply the bladder?
Superior/cranial and inferior/caudal vesical arteries (from internal iliac artery)
Which vein drains the blood supply to the bladder?
Internal iliac vein
Sensory innervation of bladder
General visceral afferents from stretch receptors
Parasympathetic innervation and effects
Pelvic splanchnic nerves, contracts detrusor and relaxes internal sphincter = micturition
Sympathetic innervation and effects
Hypogastric nerves, relaxes detrusor, contract internal sphincter = continence
Which embryological layer does the bladder and urethra arise from?
Endoderm
