Lower limb - thigh Flashcards
Mnemonic for nerve supply to each compartment of the thigh.
- MAP OF Sciatic
- Medial = Obturator
- Anterior = Femoral
- Posterior = Sciatic
What is the main action of the anterior compartment muscles of the thigh?
Extend the lower limb at the knee joint (mostly)
What muscles are in the anterior compartment of the thigh? (Mnemonic)
I Saw A Pretty Queen
- I = Iliopsoas (iliac + psoas major)
- Saw = Sartorius (also knee flexion)
- A = tensor fAscia lAtA
- Pretty = Pectineus
- Queen = Quadriceps femoris (group of 4)
What are the four quadriceps muscles and their actions?
- rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus intermedius, vastus medialis
- VL, VI and VM = extension of knee joint
- RF = extension of knee joint + flexion at hip joint (crosses both joints)
What are the medial compartment muscles of the thigh also known as, and what muscles are part of it (mnemonic)?
- AKA Hip ADDuctors
- Give Obama 3x Apples
- Give = Gracilis
- Obama = Obturator externus
- 3x Apples = Adductor magnus (2 parts), Adductor longus, Adductor brevis
What is the overall function of the posterior compartment of thigh muscles, and what muscles are part of it (mnemonic)?
- extend at the hip joint, flex at the knee joint
- By Sydney Street (lateral to medial)
- By = Biceps femoris (think most lateral = also does lateral flexion)
- Sydney = Semitendinosus
- Street = Semimembranosus
What combined overall mnemonic can be used for remembering the muscles of each of the compartments of the thigh?
I Saw (A) Pretty Queen Give Obama 3x Apples By Sydney Street
How can we remember the femoral triangle?
- mnemonic for boundaries: triangle is shaped like a SAIL
- laterally: Sartorius (S)
- medially: Adductor longus (A)
- superiorly: Inguinal Ligament (IL)
- mnemonic for contents: NAVEL (laterally to medially)
- femoral Nerve
- femoral Artery
- femoral Vein
- Empty space (femoral canal)
- Lymph canal = lymph nodes and vessels
