Visual impairment
A person substantially/permanently handicapped by defect vision caused through congenital defect, injury or illness.
VA 3/60 - 6/60
or up to 6/24 w/ moderate field constriction or
VA 6/18 or > if severe field loss
Severe visual impairment
So blind they can’t perform work for which sight is essential
Causes impaired visual acuity - children (6)
Amblyopia Congenital cataract Albinism Bupthalmos/ congenital glaucoma Optic atrophy Retinopathy or prematurity

Used to measure visual acuity
Equal no’ letters per line which decreased in a logarithmic fashion
Low vision devices for children
Bar magnifiers, dome magnifiers
Bifocal glasses with high adds for reading
Low vision devices for adults
Hand magnifiers, stand magnifiers
Strong reading glasses
Binoculars/monoculars
What is a LVI (letter of visual impairment)
Designed for optometrist/clinician outside hospital to provide info to council and implying responsibility of provision by social services
What is an RVI
Referral of visual impairment
Allows social services to help
What is a CVI - certificate of visual impairment
Issued by ophthalmologist
SS provision compulsory
Access to benefits
Must inform DVLA
What is GOS18
Used by optometrists to relay info to GP + hospital eye serivces
Implies transfer of responsibility to GP
