Lorenz Study Flashcards
Imprinting
Imprinting is irreversible
Any kind of phase sensitive learning (learning occurring at a particular stage) that is rapid and apparently independent of the consequences of behaviour. It is an innate readiness to acquire certain behaviour.
Critical period
Imprinting is restricted to a definite period of time. If the animals have not seen a moving object within the critical period, it will not imprint.
For humans critical period- birth to 5 years if not attached not able to develop healthy relationships.
Sexual imprinting
Later mates are chose based upon the object they imprinted on.
Nature vs nurture
Nature- out genetics determine our behaviour. Something that Is preprogrammed
Nurture- environment impacts our behaviour
Why would it make sense from an evolutionary perspective for the offspring to be programmed to attach?
Natural instinct to survive. You’re gonna imprint to the caregiver to survive and use them for protection.
