Q

Supporting evidence Hazen and Shaver 1987

A
  • H&S researched the link between infant or childhood attachment types and adult relationships
  • found (using a questionnaire which asked adults to reflect on their childhood) a positive correlation; secrueely attached children who had secure and close relationships with their parents developed secure, stable and loving relationships with their adult partners
  • insecure avoidant, who had cold and rejecting mothers developed insecure relationships with high levels of aggressions and fear of rejection
  • suggest that there is relationships of attachment between childhood and any adulthood relationship performed therefore gives evidence for the IWM

ISSUES WITH THE STUDY IS THAT IT IS RETROSPECTIVE

Q

Supporting internal working model: Bailey et al

A

Assessed 99 mothers on the quality of attachment to their own mothers.

Found that mothers who reported a poor attachment to their own parents also reported that they had a poor relationship with their own children.

Support IWM

I.e attachment at childhood with relationships at adulthood

Q

Brazelton et al

A

Observed babies trigger interactions with adults using social releasers.

The researchers then instructed the babies’ primary attachment figures to
ignore their babies’ social releasers.

Babies (who were previously shown to be normally responsive) became
increasingly distressed and some eventually curled up and lay motionless.

This illustrates the role of social releasers in emotional development and suggests that they are important in the process of attachment development.

Q

Lorenz research support bowlby montropic theory

A

Imprinting innate

The attachment process of imprinting is an innate process which has a critical period. Also geese attached to a single animal/person/object soo shows montropic behaviour. Provides evidence for the critical period in terms of attachment 4-25hrs.
