Lookout Protection Flashcards
Lookout
a competent person whose sole duty is to maintain a constant lookout and provide warnings of approaching rail traffic until relieved
Whispering death
nickname for the Prospector railcars and Electric Multiple Units (EMU railcars). They accelerate fast and can be virtually silent
Signalling equipment for a lookout
Radio, Air horn, whistle
Duties of the lookout
look for trains, stay at post, stay alert, give warning signal on the approach of any rail vehicle
Warnings must be given in time for workers to
acknowledge the lookout by raising one arm, remove themselves and any tools to a safe place, be clear of track atleast 10 seconds before traffic arrives
Calculating warning time required and minimum sighting distance
Speed of train + position of safety time + reaction time + time to clear
Position of safety time
10s
Reaction time
5s
If a worker does not acknowledge the signal
it must be repeated until they do
Touch lookout protection
reacts with the signal that has gone off by simply touching each person so that can move off the tracks and stay clear from the train. Used if noisy equipment is being used
When workers receive the warning signal from the lookout they need to
raise one hand above their head as acknowledgement, clear people and equipment from the tracks to a safe position immediately, remain clear of the 3 m danger zone until the rail movement has passed
The rules that define a safe place
where there is at least 3m clearance between the person and the nearest running line, properly constructed for use as a refuge, where a structure or physical barrier has been provided for protection, behaind the safety line on a platform
