Long Bone Structure Flashcards
1
Q
Periosteum
A
Covers the diaphysis, secured by connective tissue fibres.
2
Q
Epiphysis
A
Thin later of compact bone enclosing spongy bone at the ends of long bones.
3
Q
Articular cartilage
A
Glassy hyaline cartilage, decreases friction at joint surfaces.
4
Q
Epiphyseal plate
A
Hyaline cartilage in young growing bone. Responsible for lengthwise growth of a long bone.
5
Q
Epiphyseal line
A
Remainder of the epiphyseal plate.
6
Q
Yellow marrow
A
Adipose tissue stored in the bone shaft of adults.
7
Q
Red marrow
A
Stored in bone shaft of children, forms blood cells.
8
Q
Diaphysis/Shaft
A
Compact bone, makes up the bones length. Covered by periosteum.
