Spongy bone
Small needle like pieces of bone, lots of open space.
What are the 4 bone shapes?
- Long bone
- Short bones
- Flat bones
- Irregular bones
Long bone
Longer than they are wide, mostly compact bone. Ex. Bones in the limbs.
Short bones
Cube shaped, mostly spongy. Ex. Knee/carpal bones
Flat bones
Thin, flat and usually curved. Two layers of contact bone sandwiching spongy bone. Ex. Skull, ribs and sternum.
Irregular bones
Don’t fit in any other category. Ex. Vertebrae and hip bones.
Compact bone
Dense, looks smooth.
Tuberosity
Large rounded projection.
Crest
Narrow ridge of bone, usually prominent.
Trochanter
Large, blunt and irregularly shaped process.
Line
Narrow ridge of bone, less prominent.
Tubercle
Small, rounded projection.
Epicondyle
Raised are on or above a condyle.
Spine
Sharp, slender, often pointed projection.
Head
Bony expansion on a narrow neck.
Facet
Smooth, nearly flat articular surface.
Condyle
Round articular projection.
Ramus
Arm like bar of bone.
Meatus
Canal like passageway.
Sinus
Cavity filled with air and line with mucous membranes.
Fossa
Shallow depression in bone, often serving as an articular surface.
Fissure
Narrow, slit like opening.
Foramen
Round or oval opening through a bone.
