Bone Formation, Growth And Remodeling Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 2 steps of ossification?
A
- Hyaline cartilage is covered by bone forming cells called osteoblasts.
Hyaline cartilage is digested away, opening up a medullary cavity within the newly formed bone. - Controlled by hormones, most importantly the growth hormone.
2
Q
What are the 2 regions that are not converted to bone after birth?
A
- Articulate cartilage
2. Epiphyseal plates
3
Q
What 2 factors initiate bone remodelling?
A
- Blood calcium levels.
2. Pull of gravity and muscles on the skeleton.
4
Q
Osteoclasts
A
Giant bone destroying cells activated by parathyroid hormone.
5
Q
What are the 2 strongest tissues that make up the skeleton?
A
Cartilage and bone.
