Logie Flashcards
Procedure
Participants were asked to recall a list of words in one of two ways, either: using images to visualise words or using maintenance rehearsal (repeating them silently in their head).
The participants were then distracted either by the same method in which they had been asked to remember the words (those using visual images were distracted with other pictures, whilst those using maintenance rehearsal were played other speech sounds) or the opposite method (those using visual images were distracted with speech sounds, whilst those using maintenance rehearsal were shown pictures)
Experimental method
Laboratory
Experimental design
Independent groups
Sampling method
Volunteer sampling
Findings
Participants recalled more words correctly when they were distracted with the opposite method in which they learnt the words. This is because the two tasks used different systems.
However, they recalled fewer words correctly when they were distracted with the same method in which they learnt the words. This is because the two tasks made use of the same system (the system tried to remember the first set if information whilst completing the distraction task).
Conclusions
STM is divided into multiple systems. These systems work well when they perform two tasks which use different systems at the same time, but less well when two or more tasks used the same system at the same time.
