Godden and Baddeley (1975) asked 18 Scottish scuba-divers to learn 36 words of 2-3 syllables either underwater or on land. They were then asked to remember the words in either the same context (learning underwater and remembering underwater) or a different context. They found that participants remembered more words correctly when they recalled them in the same context as they were learnt: 32% in the underwater condition and 37% on land. (This was compared to and 23% when learnt underwater and recalled on land and 23% for the opposite condition).
