Locomotor physiology Flashcards
what is an EMG
The EMG (electromyography) records electrical impulses in muscles produce
what is an evoke EMG
Evoked EMG – when nerve is stimulated to evoke a response.
What is the nerve conduction test
The Nerve Conduction test measures the speed at which impulses travel along a nerve.
what is latency
the time from the stimulus to the initial deflection from baseline.
what is amplitude
measure of its change over a single period.
what does an EMG measure
- latency
- amplitude
- duration
how do you work out evoked EMG
distance/ proximal latency - distal latency
what does a delay in latency mean
- it could mean that there is nerve dysfunction
what is reflex
it is an involuntary motor action triggered by a reaction to a sensory input
what type of reflexes are the patella or achilles reflexes
- these are tendon jerk reflexes
they are also known as myotactic reflexes
what is it called when you do actions to make the reflex appear
jendrassic manoeuvre
how do you set up EMG
place one electrode on the palm of the hand
- two on the thumb
- stimulation of the nerve will produce compound action potentials in the muscle which are detected via surface electrodes
what is a nerve conduction velocity housed to test
it assess nerve damage and destruction
what is conduction velocity determined by
- axon diameter
- myelination
- temperature
- internal resistance of the axons
