Locations Flashcards
Laboratory
A room equipped to allow scientific research and measurement.
Often experiments but not always ( observations )
Field
More natural setting e.g. supermarket, school
Researchers goes to the participant
online
Using websites and access participants through the internet.
Lab advantages
Allows researchers to measure research variables Hold lots of equipment that cannot be moved like PET machines Controlled environment ( less confounding variable )
Lab disadvantages
- The environment may cause participants to have false behaviour e.g. some might do good or bad on purpose
- Some experiments physically can’t take place in a lab. For example elephants in Africa
Field advantages
Minimise artificial nature of research/influence.
Behaviour from participants may be more natural so, findings will be more valid
Field disadvantages
Harder to control variables in wild
Difficult to repeat results
Intruding on privacy
Online advantages
More access to other research
Cheaper
Data analysis is quicker
Easy to get large sample
Online disadvantages
Online research methods are Limited - questionnaire
Ethical issues consent
Hard to debrief patients online
