JPs were appointed for life where as sheriffs were appointed annually
What was the role of the JPs?
Crowns representatives at a local level
What roles did sheriffs have to do?
- Manage parliamentary elections
- Detain criminals
What were the two types of court?
Court of assize and the court of king’s bench
What was the court of assize responsible for?
The most serious offenses e.g treason or murder
Who were the judges on the court of assize appointed by?
The king
What did the court of king’s bench have the power to do?
Override lower courts decisions e.g court of assize and quarter sessions ran by JPs
