Living anatomy Flashcards
Why is being able to palpate the pubic tubercule advantagous?
Being able to locate this bony landmark (pubic tubercle) is advantageous since it can be used when palpating for the approximate location of the deep ring of the inguinal canal (if inspecting for inguinal hernias). The deep inguinal ring is location midway between the pubic tubercle and the ASIS.
What is linea alba?
the midline vertical line which is the meeting point for the aponeuroses (tendonous sheets) of all of the flat muscles of the anterior abdominal wall.
What are tendonous intersections?
Rectus Abdominis muscles appear as verticle muscles on either side of the midline. Identify the horizontal Tendinous Intersections present in the muscle which prevent the muscles from bowing. These give the rectus abdominus muscle the characteristic appearance of the ‘six pack muscle’ visible on lean individuals
What is linea semilunaris?
Observe the lateral border of the rectus abdominus muscle extending from the pubic tubercle upward to intersect the costal cartilage at the tip of the 9th costal cartilage. This lateral border is given the name Linea Semilunaris (linea = line; luna = moon) asit resembles a crescent moon.
What are the anterolatero group of muscles?
the external and internal obliques plus transversus abdominis.
What is the relationship between the arcuate line and the rectus sheath?
Identify the Arcuate Line and observe how below this line the aponeuroses of all anterolateral muscles which form the Rectus Sheath course in front of the Rectus Abdominus.
What are the lines that make up the division of the abdomen into 9?
The abdomen is divided into nine regions through the intersections of two horizontal and two vertical lines:
- the left and right midclavicular, vertically
- the transpyloric and transtubercular, horizontally
