What is meant by orthotopic liver transplant?
When the entire liver is transplanted from a deceased donor to a recipient
What is meant by living donor liver transplant?
When a portion of the liver is taken from a living donor and transplanted into the recipient (both regenerate to become two fully functioning organs)
What is meant by split liver donation?
When the liver from a deceased donor is split into two and transplanted into two recipients (both parts regenerate to become two fully functioning organs)
What are the indications for liver transplant?
- Acute liver failure
- Chronic liver failure
- Specific cases of hepatocellular carcinoma
What are the most common causes of acute liver failure?
- Acute viral hepatitis
- Paracetamol overdose
How long must a patient with chronic liver failure secondary to alcohol use be abstinent from alcohol to be considered for liver transplant?
At least 6 months
What kind of scar may be visible in a patient who has has a liver transplant?
- Rooftop scar
- Mercedes Benz scar
