What is the most common cause of ileus?

A

Abdominal surgery, e.g. handling the bowel during surgery

What are the clinical features of ileus?

A

Very similar to bowel obstruction:

  • Abdominal pain and distension
  • Nausea and vomiting (typically bilious)
  • Absolute constipation and lack of flatulence

Describe the management of ileus

A

Supportive:

  • NBM
  • “Drip and suck” (IV fluids and NG tube)
  • Mobilisation to help stimulate peristalsis
