What is meant by the term “ileus”?
A
Ileus refers to a condition affecting the small bowel, where peristalsis temporarily stops

What is the most common cause of ileus?
A
Abdominal surgery, e.g. handling the bowel during surgery

What are the clinical features of ileus?
A
Very similar to bowel obstruction:
- Abdominal pain and distension
- Nausea and vomiting (typically bilious)
- Absolute constipation and lack of flatulence

What is typically heard on auscultation of the abdomen in a patient with ileus?
A
Nothing! (absent bowel sounds)

Describe the management of ileus
A
Supportive:
- NBM
- “Drip and suck” (IV fluids and NG tube)
- Mobilisation to help stimulate peristalsis
