Indications
A
- Evaluation of functional liver disease: cirrhosis, hepatitis
- Evaluate size, shape and position of liver/spleen
- Detection of hepatic lesions
- Evaluation of hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, jaundice and liver enzyme abnormalities of uncertain causes

Contraindications
A
- Recent iodinated or barium contrast studies.
- Barium in the colon may cause artificial defects

- No patient prep required

Positioning
A
- Patient supine with FOV over upper abdomen.
- Use xyphoid and costal margin as anatomical markers

- Target: Liver/Spleen
- Critical: Liver/ Spleen
- Excretion: RES to bowel - not seen during exam
- Localization: Phagocytosis by Kupffer cells

Procedure
A
- Flow: Position using point source 1-3 s/f for 1 min
- Blood pool: 1 min or 500K counts
- Statics: Wait 15 min after injection. Patients with liver dysfunction or portal hypertension may have to wait 20-30 min. ANT/POS w/ marker, ANT/POS w/o, LATs.OBLs for 500k-1M counts
- SPECT possible: 360º eliptical, 64-120 stops at 30 sec/stop

- Norm: Will see some bone marrow
- Norm: Kidney, bladder potential
- AB: visualization of lungs - hepatic disease
- AB: Hot or Cold spots. Hot - focal nodular hyperplasia (benign). Cold - tumors or other lesions
