hepatic disease
RUQ pain, referred pain in right shoulder or back, dark urine, yellow stool (build up of bilirubin), yellowing skin, spiger angiomas
liver cirrhosis
chronic progressive inflammation of liver- loss of normal liver function (fibrosis)
most common cause: alcohol abuse
portal hypertension
portal vein- blood frm stomach, SI, spleen, pancrease to liver
causes: blood clots, cirrhosis, infection
vericose veins in abdomen
hepatic encephalopathy
complex neuropsychiatric syndrome;
difficulty with executive function;
increased levels of ammonia
pt implications for portal hypertension and hepatic encephalopathy
fall prevention, immobile and malnourished (susceptible to skin breakdown), rest between activities
ascites
abnormal accumulation of fluid with the peritoneal cavity- most due to decompensated liver cirrhosis
alcohol related liver disease
most common sign: hepatomegaly
prognosis: cirrhosis + abstain drinking 80% 5 year survival rate
cholelithiasis (gallstone disease)
most common GI disease in US; bile stones- block cystic duct
cholecystitis
inflammation of gall bladder
