Q

what happens when the liver is injured?

A
  1. due to injury the smooth liver tissue becomes bumpy and stiff
  2. over time inflammation causes bands of scar tissue to form between the nodules
  3. as the scar tissue grows, the compresses the network of blood supply in the liver
  4. this leads to increased venous pressure ad portal hypertension

Q

what happens during portal hypertension?

A

portal hypertension occurs when the blood backs up to the portal vein.
with higher portal vein pressure means fluids in the blood vessels are more likely to get pushed into the tissues leading to peripheral edema and ascites
