Liver and Gall Bladder Flashcards
What are the 4 lobes of the liver?
right, left, quadrate, caudate
Ligaments of the liver
falciform ligament: sheet of mesentery that suspends the liver from the diaphragm and anterior abdominal wall
round ligament: carries blood from the umbilical cord to the liver of a fetus
Vessels attached to the liver
- hepatic portal vein
- hepatic arteries
- hepatic veins
Types of liver cells
- hepatocyte
- stellate macrophages
Function of hepatocytes
- absorbs glucose, amino acids, iron, vitamins, and other nutrients for metabolism or storage
- remove and degrade hormones, toxins, bile pigments, and drugs
- secretes albumin, lipoproteins, clotting factors, angiotensinogen
- breakdown stored glycogen and release glucose into the circulation
Function of stellate macrophages
remove bacteria and particulate debris from the blood
How does blood flow to the liver?
hepatic portal vein: brings blood from the stomach, intestines, pancreas, and spleen
hepatic arteries: delivers oxygen to the liver
How does blood flow from the liver?
- central vein
- hepatic veins
- empties into the inferior vena cava
Which vessels are oxygen-rich?
hepatic arteries
Which vessels are oxygen-poor?
hepatic portal vein
Which vessels are nutrient rich?
hepatic portal vein
What is a lobule?
structural unit of the liver
How many lobules are in each lobe?
100,000
What are the components of each lobule?
hexagonal collections of hepatocytes partitioned by connective tissue
How does blood flow through the lobules?
- blood enters the liver sinusoids via the hepatic portal vein and hepatic arteries
- blood collects in the central vein at the core of the lobule after being processed by the hepatocytes
- blood collects in the central vein then empties into the inferior vena cava via the hepatic veins
What is bile?
watery solution of minerals, cholesterol, neutral fats, phospholipids, bile pigments, bile acids, and lipid-transport vesicles
Where is bile made?
liver
What are bile salts?
steroids synthesized from cholesterol
What do bile salts do?
aids in fat digestion and absorption
What is the route bile takes?
- bile is secreted by hepatocytes into the bile canaliculi
- bile flows into the bile ductules
- bile ductules converge to form left and right hepatic ducts
- left and right hepatic ducts form the common hepatic duct
- common hepatic duct joins the cystic duct to form the bile duct
- bile duct joints with the pancreatic duct to form the hepatopancreatic ampulla
- hepatopancreatic ampulla empties into the duodenum
General functions of the liver
- bile production
- storage and release of glycogen, lipids, vitamins, and minerals
- conversion of nutrients
- detoxification
- synthesis of plasma proteins
- phagocytosis
Functions of the gallbladder
receives, stores, and concentrates bile produced by the liver
What causes the release of bile into the intestines?
cholecystokinin (CCK) triggers contractions of the gallbladder and relaxation of the hepatosphincter, discharging bile into the duodenum
What does the bile travel through to get from the gallbladder to the duodenum?
- gallbladder
- cystic duct
- bile duct
- hepatopancreatic duct
- major duodenal papilla
- duodenum
