Liver Anatomy Flashcards
What is the dual blood supply for the liver?
The hepatic artery and the portal vein
What is the basic unit of the liver?
The liver lobule
What are the three components of the portal triad?
- Bile duct
- Hepatic artery
- Portal vein
What direction does bile flow? Direction of portal vein blood flow?
- Bile - Outwards toward the bile duct
- Venous blood - inward from the portal vein to the central vein
What is the functional interpretation of the liver lobule?
The acinus which has the portal tract at the center of the functional unit
Describe the zone designations of the functional unit of the liver
Zone 1 is most highly oxygenated and surrounds the portal tract. Zone three has the lowest oxygen saturation and is around the central veins.
What performs the major fn of the liver?
Hepatocyte
What are the channels through which blood traverses the liver?
Hepatic sinusoids
Three cell types contained w/i the sinusoid?
Endothelial, Kupffer, stellate
Describe the specialization of the endothelial cells in hepatocytes.
Fenestrations allow for free communication b/w the sinusoidal lumen and the space of Disse
What are kupffer cells?
Bone-marrow derived phagocytes
