liver
largest organ in the body (3#)
where is the liver located?
RIGHT epigastric region
most is enclosed in peritoneum
fibrous capsule - divides into L and R lobes
lobules
**functional units of the liver
-each has rows of hepatic cells (hepatocytes) arranged around a central vein
-sinusoids (capillaries) are in between the hepatocytes and lined with kupffer cells
kupffer cells
remove bacteria and toxics from the blood
portal circulation
brings blood to the liver from the stomach, intestines, spleen, and pancreas
*blood enters through portal vein - absorbed products of digestion come directly to the liver and sent to the lobules
“first pass effect”
functions of the liver
ESSENTIAL for life - NUMEROUS FXN’s
-digestive
-endocrine
-hematologic
-excretory
digestive functions of the liver
bile secretion - helps with fat digestion
processing and storage of fats, carbs, PRO, and minerals
endocrine functions of the liver
metabolism of glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, and sex hormones
regulation of carb, fat, and protein metabolism
hematologic functions of the liver
temporary storage of blood
removal of bilirubin (broken down Hgb) from blood
synthesis of blood clotting factors
excretory functions of the liver
excretion of bile pigment
excretion of cholesterol
synthesis of urea
detoxification of drugs and other foreign substances
