1) Livability - The degree to which a place is suitable for living in.
2) Urbanization - The process by which a large number of people become concentrated in small areas, forming a city.
3) Urban vs. Rural - Urban is a concentration of population at high density. Whereas, rural is not concentrated and is at low density.
4) Sustainability - The ability to maintain or support the use of natural resources over a long period of time.
5) Urban hierarchy - A ranking system based on the size/importance of a town or city.
6) Population distribution - A measure of how spread out a population is in an area.
7) Population density - The number of people per unit of area.
8) Land use group - A term used to describe the human use of land.
9) Zoning by law - Controls the use of land in a community.

How has the percentage of people settled in urban and rural areas changed over time?

A

More people are moving to urban areas. While cities become bigger the rural populations become smaller. This could be for many reasons. As of 1966, 37% of the rural population decreased, to 17% in 2021. While the urban population increased by 169% in the exact same time period.

Why has there been a shift to people living in more urban areas?

A

The main reasons for people to move to urban areas, is because there are better/more job opportunities, higher wages, higher levels of education, and better/easier access to healthcare and other resources.

Identify characteristics of a city that improves its liveability. What factors would cause a city to be less liveable?

A

There are many factors that improves the liveability of a community. Like access to fresh water and food, transportation, housing, and access to healthcare and education. However, there are things that makes a city less liveable like high crime rates, poor air and water quality, lack of affordable housing, and limited access to healthcare and education.

Suggest things that can be changed to improve the liveability of your community.

A

Personally, I feel that the liveability of my community is pretty good. Considering that we have very easy access to food and water, education, transportation, and healthcare. But there are some things that can improve an y city as a whole For example, you can make transportation more accessible by adding lights in sidewalks and adding bike ramps in popular areas.

Where does Toronto rank in terms of livable communities, according to Macleans and why do you think this is the case?

A

Canada ranks in the 19th spot of Macleans’ survey. I believe this happened because Toronto is very indulged in cultural diversity, job opportunities, and green spaces. They also have a lot of transportation methods, and is famous for their landmarks and food from all over the world.
