Q

Which method of catching fish is the worst for the environment? Explain.

A

Otter trawling is the worst method of fishing. This involves throwing a large bag shaped net into the ocean, which is then dragged across the ocean floor to catch fish that live in those areas. This method is bad because it destroys the natural sea floor. As the net is dragged across the floor, it destroys everything in its path.

Q

Describe the major differences between the inshore and offshore fishery.

A

Inshore fishing has very small boats and only fish within 16-25 km of the shore. Whereas, offshore fishing has very large boats and fish from 370 km from the shore. Inshore fishing also have very limited access to gear and materials, unlike offshore. Inshore also only has a crew size of 1 - 6 people and only take day trips, ommiting bad weather to fish. Whereas, offshore fishing has a crew size of 12 - 16 people and targets to go fishing for 2 weeks or more at a time.

Q

What is the continental shelf and how does it help fishing?

A

In other words, it’s where a portion of a landmass is submerged beneath the ocean, and forms an increase in slope down the ocean. This is crucial for fishing because due to the shallow waters, it receives more sunlight which supports the growth of plankton and other ocean plants. This forms the base of the oceanic food cycle. Where plankton is eaten by zooplankton, which is eaten by small fish like herring, which are then eaten by larger fish and marine animals like seals and whales. Because of this chain, it attracts other fish which contributes to how much fish are caught by anglers.
