Chapter 1:
-Utterson (lawyer) + Enfield (cousin) walking in London
-E. describes sighting of girl being trampled by Hyde
Chapter 2:
-U. at home, looks at Jekyll’s will, sees that Hyde receives most of his possessions
-waits near Hyde’s door and talks to him about how U. knew him
Chapter 3:
-the dinner party
-U. talks to J. about the will and his concerns about Hyde
-he doesn’t want to talk about it, and makes Utterson promise to help Hyde if Jekyll were to die
Chapter 4:
-maid witnesses Hyde murder someone at midnight, faints, calls police
-find gold + letter, U. identifies man as Sir Danvers Carew and the broken cane as J.’s
-looks inside H.’s room, its ransacked and finds remains of a cheque book in fire, and the other half of the cane
Chapter 5:
-U. visits J. who looks sick and has a letter (from Hyde), gives it to him - J. behaves more erratically
-U. checks with Poole if there was a letter delivered that day but he said there wasn’t
-U. meets with head clerk (Mr Guest) who says the letter has the same handwriting as a dinner invitation from Jekyll
Chapter 6:
-J. seems more at peace, but later U. is denied access to see him
-Lanyon is sick, doesn’t want to discuss Jekyll
-L. dies, U. opens letter from him which has another letter inside which is not to be opened until J. dies/disappears
Chapter 7:
-U. and E. walk past H.’s door again, and step into the courtyard to see J. through a window
-talk to J. for a while, until his face changes and he quickly shuts the window, they are both shocked
Chapter 8:
-breaks into J.’s room, finds that H. just killed himself and is wearing clothes too big for him
-finds an updated will that was meant to be sent to U. the next day, and it leaves everything to U.
Chapter 9:
-Lanyon’s narrative, as a letter, to Utterson
-explains how he had received a letter from Jekyll instructing him to go to Jekyll’s house, where he sees Hyde transform into Jekyll
Chapter 10:
-Jekyll describes his background, and his ideas of human duality
-explains his experiments and how he found out how to transform into Hyde, and then loses control over when he wants to transform or not
