What questions are there in the unseen poetry?

A

-in the poem given, how does the poet present ideas about something [24]

-in both given poems, what are the similarities and/or differences between the methods used to present something [8]

What is assessed in the first part of unseen poetry?

A

AO1 - how well you answer the question and the quotes that you use

AO2 - analysis of the poem’s language/structure/form techniques and their effects

No AO3 for context

How would you structure an answer to the 24 marker?

A

-intro (1-2 sentences, concise overview of the ideas/attitudes in the poem, could refer to the title)

-2-3 paragraphs with one idea in each
-1 paragraph for language
-1 paragraph for structure/form
-1 paragraph for anything else (eg perspective)

-conclusion (similar to intro but refer to key terms in question and save an idea for the end)

What structural devices should you always look out for?

A

-enjambment/caesura
-emphasised/repeated words at the start/end
-tonal/focus shift
-stanza sizes
-pace using commas

What forms of poems are there usually?

A

epic - describes an important event
narrative - a story
sonnet - 14 lines, rhyming, and iambic rhythm
dramatic monologue - 1st person, usually biased in some way
free verse - no rules

A

-perceptive comparison

How would you structure an answer to the 8 mark comparison?

A

-3 mini paragraphs with one comparative idea for each

-state a similarity/difference in the methods used between the 2 poems
-explore the meaning of the method used
-comment on its effects and how it may differ between the 2 poems, even though it may use the same technique
