Lipids Flashcards
What are Lipids?
-energy storage
-structural component
-some hormones are lipid based
-acts as a cushion for organs
-insulators against cold
-carries fat soluable vitamins (ADEK)
How are Triglycerides formed?
By the union of glycerol and three fatty acids.
What is the name for Triglycerides that are solid at room temperature? Liquid at room temperature?
Fats.
Oils.
Saturated Fatty Acids are full of what element? (animal fats)
Hydrogen
Unsaturated Fatty Acids contain how many bonds leading to them not having max amount of hydrogen?
double or triple
Most of the fatty acids in animal fats are…
A. Unsaturated
B. Saturated
B. Saturated
Most of the fatty acids in plants are…
A. Unsaturated
B. Saturated
A. Unsaturated
Between unsaturated and saturated fatty acids, which of the two are harder to break down?
Saturated Fatty Acids
What are phospholipids?
A lipid with a phosphate molecule attached to the glycerol backbone, the major components of cell membrane
Which end of the phospholipid is soluable in water?
The head
What is cholesterol? Where is it found?
Cholesterol is used to make hormones. The body obrains needed cholesterol from the fats consumed. It is found in the cell membrane. Many things such as exercise and certain foods help to lower cholesterol levels.
What are Steriods?
Chemicals produced by the body which act as chemical messengers, reguating cell function. Anabolic steriods are versions of the male sex hormone, testosterone which act to increase muscle mass.
