Enzymes Flashcards
What are enzymes?
Protein catalysts that speed up the rate of reactions at low temperatures
What type of energy increases the rate of reactions?
Thermal
Fill the blanks: It _ the amount of energy to run the reaction
reduces
What is an exergonic reaction?
-releases energy
-produces have less energy than reactants
-Exothermic: heat loss
What breaks down Nucleic Acids?
Nucleases
What breaks down proteins?
Proteases
What breaks down Sucrose?
Sucrase
what is another word for “break down”
Hydrolysis
What breaks down Lipids?
Lipases
What are the 3 steps of the Lock and Key Model?
- The substrate bonds to the enzyme forming enzyme-substrate complex
- The binding of the substrate and enzyme (active site) places stress on the substrate bond. Bond breaks
- Products are released and enzyme is free to bind to other substrates
What does the Substrate bond consist of?
Sucrose, glucose and fructose bonded together
What is the active site?
the area that joins with the substrate molecules.
What is the purpose of cofactors or coenzymes?
to help bind enzymes to substrate molecules.
What are cofactors?
Inorganic ions (minerals)
What are coenzymes?
Organic molecules
