Carbohydrates & Biochemistry Flashcards
What are the 5 “chemicals of life”?
- Carbohydrates
- Lipids
- Proteins
- Vitamins and Minerals
- Nucleic Acids
what are carbohydrates?
Energy Source, stored as fat.
What are the three forms of Carbs?
-Monosaccharides (single unit)
-Disaccharides (2 unit)
-Polysaccharides (many unit)
What is the process in which Disaccharides are formed?
Dehydration Synthesis (dehydroloysis) is when a water molecule is formed from the two monosaccharide molecules.
What is the opposite reaction of Dehydrolysis?
Hydrolysis is when a water molecule is used to break the bond of the disaccharide.
What is a Starch?
A plant carbohydrate used to store energy
What is Glycogen?
The forming of carbohydrate storage in animals (polysaccharide)
What is Cellulose?
A plant polysaccharide that makes up plant cell walls
What are Nucelic Acids?
They’re involved in protein synthesis, and found in the Nucleus as part of DNA and RNA
What does “Organic” mean?
Contains Carbon
What does “Inorganic” mean?
Doesn’t contain carbon
What are examples of Organic Compounds?
-Carbohydrates
-Lipids
-Proteins
-Vitamins
-Nucleic Acids
What are examples of Inorganic Compounds?
-Water
-Minerals
-Gases
