Lipids Flashcards
Lipids
Long term energy storage molecules that contain C, H, and O –> have more C-H bonds and less O-H bonds than carbs
- Hydrophobic, insoluble in water
Functions
Long term energy storage, for building membranes & other cell parts, chemical signalling
Fats
Most common lipid (stores 2x energy of carbs & proteins) –> animals convert excess carbs to fat droplets in adipose tissue
Fats: Triglycerides
Most common fats in plants & animals
- Contain 3 fatty acids and 1 glycerol molecule
- Fatty acids can be saturated (all single-bonded carbons) or unsaturated (contains double bonds)
- Ester linkages
Phospholipids
Composes cell membrane –> made up of 2 fatty acids, 1 phosphate, and 1 glycerol
- When added to water, form micelles (hydrophilic heads orient towards water, hydrophobic tails orient inwards towards each other)
Sterols (Steroids)
Contain 4 fused hydrocarbon rings and several different functional groups –> act as chemical messengers
Waxes
Contain long-chain fatty acids linked to alcohols or C-rings –> hydrophobic with firm, pliable consistency (ideal as waterproof coatings)
