Lipids Flashcards
Lipid
fatty acids monomers, hydrophobic molecules- fat, oil, phospholipid, cholesterol, hormones, waxes, etc.
Fatty Acids
long hydrocarbon (nonpolar H and Cs) with a carboxyl group
Amphipathic
molecule has both hydrophobic and hydrophilic areas
Steroids
contains a fused ring structure- hydrophobic and insoluble
Cholesterol
precursor to steroid hormones, in plasma membrane= affects fluidity and permeability of cell membranes
Molecular structure of a triglyceride
3 carbon glycerol molecule bonded by an ester bond to 3 fatty acid chains, fats/oils are triglycerides
Saturated
max amount of H on the Cs- can pack together nice= solid at room temp
Unsaturated
at least 1 double bond between Cs= kink= harder to pack close together= liquid at room temp
cis
unsaturation on the same side of the molecule (H on either side of the double bonds are on the same side), leads to kinked structure= liquid
trans
unsaturation on the opposite sides of the molecule (H on either side of the double bonds are on opposite sides), leads to more linear structure= solid
