Articulatory phonetics:
study of the production of speech sounds
Acoustic phonetics:
study of the transmission and the physical properties of speech sounds
Auditory phonetics:
study of the perception of speech sounds
Phonetics:
study of the minimal units that make up a language
Segments:
are the discrete units of the speech stream and can be further subdivided into the categories consonants and vowels.
Suprasegmentals:
they often apply to entire strings of constants and vowels- properties such as stress, tone, and intonation
Syllable:
every utterance represents a syllable
Nucleus:
vocalic part of rhyme
coda
consists of any final consonants
Monophthongs:
simple vowels composed of a single configuration of the vocal tract
Diphthongs:
complex vowels composed of a sequence of two different configurations
Running speech/continuous speech:
phrases and sentences that run together
X-ray photography:
to investigate aspects of sound production
Palatography:
to observe contact between tongue and the roof of the mouth, and instruments to measure airflow and air pressure during speech
Sound spectrograph:
tool to study acoustic phonetics with the use of pictures of the sounds
