Q

Pastern

A

Commonly recognised as the regions between the wrist and front foot.

(Also rear pastern)

17
Q

Patella

A

The cap bone - similar to knee
cap on humans - in front of the stifle joint.

(Skeletal)

18
Q

Phalanges

A

Toes / foot

Skeletal

19
Q

Pisiform bone

A

A small pea shaped bone of the upper row of the carpus. (Proximate to the stopper pad)

(Skeletal)

20
Q

Point of shoulder

A

The front of the joint where upper arm and shoulder blade meet.

21
Q

Radius

A

One of the two large bones of the forearm, the other being the ulna. It extends from the lateral side of the elbow to the dewclaw side of the carpus (wrist) and runs parallel to the ulna.

Appears as the shorter thicker bone on the diagram.

(Skeletal)

22
Q

Rear pastern

A

That part of the rear leg between the hock joint and the foot.

23
Q

Scapula

A

Shoulder blade.

Skeletal

24
Q

Second thigh

A

The lower part of the hind quarter from the stifle to the hock, which encompasses the tibia and fibula.

25
Q

Shoulder

A

Scapular

26
Q

Shoulder joint

A

The joint between the scapula and humerous.

Skeletal

27
Q

Sickle hock

A
  1. Normally seen when the dog is in motion by the inability to straighten or flex the hock joint on the back reach of the hindleg.
  2. Also seen in some breeds where the dog is standing naturally, the hock joint is bent in such a manner that the rear pastern slopes forward from the hock joint to foot when viewed from the side.
28
Q

Stifle

A

The joint of the hind leg between the first and second thigh equivalent to the knee.

(Also skeletal)

29
Q

Stopper pad

A

Proximate to pisiform bone on back of wrist.

30
Q

Tarsus

A

Hock joint (ankle)

Skeletal

31
Q

Tibia

A

Bone between stifle and hock joint (shin bone). Large weight bearing bone.

(Skeletal)

32
Q

Ulna

A

The ulna sits next to the radius in the lower front leg. This bone is an important part of the elbow joint but it is not a weight bearing bone.

Appears on diagram as the longer bone.

(Skeletal)

33
Q

Upper arm

A

Humerus - that is the bone between the point of shoulder and elbow.

34
Q

Withers

A

The highest point of the shoulder blades. The point from which the height of the dog is measured.

37
Q

Wrist

A

Carpus. Bones between the forearm and pastern.
